The Wenatchee Public Library
Funds raised by the Samara's Foundation are used to purchase equipment and visual aids. With the help of donations from local residents and the Lions we were able to provide a reading section for the blind and visually impaired at the Wenatchee Public Library. We purchased an internet access computer with a jaws speaking program. We have two CCTV's that enlarge any type of words in print. One in black and white and one in color. There is a scanner reader that will read out loud any printed item. You just place the reading material on the scanner and it scans it and reads the contents. It can read in seven different languages. We have also provided Braille books, books on tape and descriptive videos. The new descriptive videos are wonderful for the blind or visually impaired, during moments of silence on a movie the descriptive will explain what is happening on the screen. Laura Gillson directed a presentation to the Vision Impossible group on the new equipment at the Library. The Equipment for Individuals We buy products for individuals to use in their homes at work and at school. Israel is a Thelma uses a Mono Mouse on her home TV. She can read her mail, recipes, prescription bottles and much more. The CCTV is a large screen with a magnifier. You can write on checks, crossword puzzles or anything you can place on the sliding board to be magnified. Insurance companies do not provide these types of equipment. To the blind or visually impaired visual aids are freedom giving devices that allow individuals to be more independent. It it our mission to provide equal opportunities in all areas, for all people. We try every year to meet the needs of as many people as possible. Audio CrossWalks One of our on going projects and biggest projects is the installation of audio crosswalks on several streets in Wenatchee. We have worked hard with city engineers to come up with the best placement of these signals. We have received grant money form several areas to help with the cost. Plus our own fundraising efforts are contributing to the project. Audio Cross Walk signals will benefit not only the blind and visually impaired but anyone who is disabled by adding more time to effectively cross the street. |
